Dave Angle and Diane Relf: 1866 Den Hill Road, Christiansburg
This home and garden have evolved over the years to meet the owners' changing interests. Purchased in 1976 as a rundown, 40-year-old, four room house on four acres covered in weeds, locust trees, and cedars, it has served as a site to learn new skills, both horticultural and constructional, with emphasis on learning-for-sharing. Currently it is a hillside retirement home and showplace, both indoors and out, for the owners' reclaimed, recycled, and rust-adorned art. Garden emphases today include easy-care containers on the deck; a small, productive vegetable garden; and an active transition of borders from perennials to ground covers, small trees, and shrubs. This creative mix of plant materials and re-imagined objects forms a home and art studio that are open for visitors to enjoy country living while they expand their imaginations.
